Tone-Loc, whose real name was Anthony Terrell Smith, born in 1966, Anthony Terrell Smith adopted the stage name "Tone-Loc" in reference to his childhood nickname, "Antonio Loco". Her hoarse and distinctive voice is the result of a traumatic accident during her childhood, when an incident with hot water left her throat burned.

This tragic event helped forge his unique vocal style that would become his trademark. He emerged as an iconic figure of rap in the 80s.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, his career has been marked by major successes such as "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina'' to name a few.

Collaboration with Young MC

Tone-Loc has left its mark with hits such as "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina", both written by Marvin Young, also known as Young MC. The collaboration between the two artists gave birth to songs with similar sound and comic lyrics, propelling Tone-Loc to the top of success. Wild Thing" even got the status of platinum certified rap single, followed closely by "Medina".

"Funky Cold Medina" and its Powerful Aphrodisiac: The distinctive element of "Funky Cold Medina" lies in its unique theme centered on a powerful aphrodisiac. Inspired by the classic "Love Potion No. 9" of the Clovers in 1959, Tone-Loc gives a humorous touch to his own love potion. The Funky Cold Medina is so powerful that it is supposed to work even on dogs, which adds a playful dimension to the song.

Creative sampling of the title "Wild Thing"

Tone-Loc’s creativity extends to the field of sampling, with fragments borrowed from various iconic pieces. The drum break of Funkadelic’s "Get Off Your Ass and Jam", Foreigner’s "Hot Blooded" lead guitar riff, and other samples from songs from the Rolling Stones, KISS, Free, and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, give "Funky Cold Medina" a rich and varied sound texture.

Tone-Loc’s lyrics also refer to the popular mascots of the 80s. Spuds McKenzie, the dog who advertised for Budweiser, and Alex, the selling dog of Strohs, add a touch of nostalgia to the song, recalling the flamboyant era of advertising of that decade.

Tone-Loc remains an iconic figure of rap, thanks to its distinctive vocal style, its fruitful collaborations with Young MC, and its unforgettable hits such as "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina". His story, marked by personal trials and overflowing creativity, continues to resonate in the musical landscape, testifying to his lasting impact on the hip-hop scene.
